Nippon Paper Industries to use earthquake wood waste as biomass boiler fuel

As rubble disposal is becoming a major issue for the full-scale recovery of the areas damaged by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit Japan earlier this year, Nippon Paper Industries Co is contributing to solving the problem by accepting wood-based rubble for its Ishinomaki factory in Miyagi Prefecture. After crushing, the wood waste will be used as fuel in its biomass boiler no. 1 and it is expected a formal contract will be signed with the prefecture, enabling the burning of 120,000t of wood waste annually. It is hoped that the initiative will help to quicken the area’s restoration.
