Vietnam earmarks VND930tn for national electricity development plan

Vietnam will be pouring VND929.7tn (US$45.2bn) in its electricity sector in the run-up to 2020, following the announcement of the National Electricity Development Plan for 2011-20.

As a result of the investment, the power sector will increase its supply capacity in the north, central and southern regions. The sector will reduce GDP electricity – elasticity from 2.0 down to 1.5 by 2015 and 1.0 by 2020. The sector will also speed up the electrification programme in rural areas to ensure that almost all households in rural areas will have access to power by 2020.
The plan will give priority to developing power sources from renewable energy and bring the total capacity for power supply to around 1.160 MW by 2020.
