Last coal-fired plant to power down in the Pacific Northwest by 2025

The last coal-fired plant in the Pacific Northwest of the USA will shut down completely by 2025. The first boiler of TransAlta’s 1460MW Centralia plant, Washington, is to be decommissioned in 2020 with the second unit to follow five years later.

“This agreement is sending a message that states are getting serious about combating global-warming pollution and are taking steps to open up markets for home-grown clean energy,” said Bruce Nilles, deputy conservation director with the Sierra Club, whose Beyond Coal Campaign has been involved in the negotiations.

The region’s only other coal-fired power station, the PG&E plant near Boardman, Oregon, is already under an agreement to go offline in 2020.
