Future-Gen rises from the ashes, Exelon Corp announces its support

US utility Exelon Corp has announced that it will join forces with the FutureGen Alliance to develop a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) demonstration facility in eastern Illinois. The facility will consist of a 275MW integrated gasification combined-cycle power plant. The FutureGen project was announced back in 2003, by the Bush administration but was canceled apparently due to cost concerns, although sources close to IFandP at the time flagged pork barrel politics as an additional factor, with one or more Senators withholding their support due to the fact that the project was not in their constituency.

The project is expected to progress rapidly as the FutureGen alliance has already resolved all the legal issues pertaining to land use for the facility and the transmission infrastructure it will require.
