Offshore wind market in Europe expands by 54% in 2009

Last year, Europe saw its offshore wind market expand by 54% as eight new wind farms with 199 offshore turbines were connected to the grid in Europe. The new additions represent a total generating capacity of 577MW.

This year, the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) plans to complete 10 further offshore wind farms or an extra 1000MW. Currently, the region has 17 offshore units under construction with a total generating capacity of over 3500MW. Another 52 offshore wind farms have achieved complete consent, representing over 16,000MW in capacity with over half located in Germany. EWEA expects the turnover of the industry to double from EUR1.5bn in 2009 to EUR3bn this year.

The industry association is pressing the European Commission and governments to provide policy frameworks that would enhance the continuous development of the offshore wind power industry. The policy frameworks would motivate project developers to proceed with their plans and stimulate investor interest, according to Christian Kjaer, CEO of the EWEA.
